(April 7, 2021 – Euless, TX) The Spirits (40+) squad took on an extremely solid LS Spurs team Wednesday night at Texas Star in Euless. The Spurs were off to a 4-0 start on the season and it was clear to see with the number of players and the speed in which their pitchers were delivering that the Spurs were going to be a force to be reckoned with.
The teams lined up to play ball, but there was an issue with confirming players on the roster that led to a protest by the Spirits. The game eventually went on as scheduled and it was the Spurs who drew first blood by picking up a pair of runs in the first and a third in the second. The Spirits rallied for a run against the unknown Spurs pitcher, who was easily delivering in the high 80s. The Spurs then picked up their fourth run in the third and the Spirits eventually picked up a run in the sixth inning in what would have turned to to be a 4 to 2 loss by the ghosts.
Aaron Wilson and Eric Goetz each delivered on a pair of hits, with Wilson picking up a triple, run scored, and an RBI. Stacy Scott also picked up a double on the evening. The game eventually was reviewed by league officials and ruled a forfeit in favor of the Spirits due to roster issue.
“We’re not thrilled getting a W this way,” Shawn Lee commented. “We have a history trying to figure out who is on their roster. There wasn’t an intention to look for a protest until we were greeted with hostility about it. My guys work all day just like their guys. I work my tail off to align my roster, verify who’s playing that night, and then get to the field organized and ready to go so we can get in a good game in the two hour time limit allotted. We’re not there for someone else’s entertainment, and after certain things were said and presented to me we chose to take the correct path of completing the protest. We just want to play ball like anyone else; without questions, a hassle or an argument. Last thing we were looking for, but it ended this up in this direction for a reason.
The team will return to action in DFW-ABA 40 League play when they host the Drillers next Wednesday night. First pitch is slated for 8:45PM and you can click here for schedule details or to download the iScore Central app to listen to the game live online.
