Spirits (40+) Crush Cubs in Shortened Game

(May 12, 2021 – Euless, TX) It was another night of big offense for the Spirits (40+) squad Wednesday night as they trounced the Cubs in a lopsided win, 16 to 0. The ghosts put together a 13-hit attack that included a pair of doubles and 11 singles and the team utilized 11 free passes to first to roll to an easy win.

Cubs pitching simply had no answer and the combined efforts by Spirits starting pitcher, Jonathan Duran along with innings from Travis Hitzeman and Duane Aponte only allowed for 4 hits and one base-on-balls.

“Tough one to watch if you’re a Cubs fan,” mentioned Shawn Lee after the game. “They were struggling for pitching tonight and that happens sometimes in this league. They played us pretty solid at the beginning of the season, so I would expect they’ll be just fine the next time we see them. Regardless, great effort from (Jonathan) Duran tonight and also from (Eric) Goetz. Both of them hit the ball well tonight as did Hitz (Travis Hitzeman) and Sip (Kirk Sipila). Always great when all of your offense is clicking.”

The Spirits offense was quiet in the first inning but then accounted for 4 runs in the second, 8 runs in the third, and another 4 runs in the fourth before the game was called due to the league’s mercy rule.

Nearly every Spirits hit safely with all players in the lineup reaching safely at least once. Eric Goetz led the Spirits offense with a 3-for-3 performance that included a double, stolen base, run scored, a walk, and 2 RBIs. Duran picked up the victory and also finished with a double, walk, 3 runs scored, and 3 runs batted in with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Kirk Sipila and Hitzeman each finished with a pair of hits on the night as well, both scoring twice with Sipila earning one RBI and Hitzeman adding 2.

The victory pushes the Spirits record to 6-4, just above the middle of the pack as the season turns toward the latter half. The team returns to action next Wednesday night when they host the Rangers at 8:45PM. Click here for schedule details or to download the iScore Central app to listen to the game live online.
