Spirits (40+) Embarrass Themselves in DFW-ABA Opener

(March 1, 2023 – Euless, TX) This one won’t be one that you want to share with mom and the kids. The Spirits (40+) squad failed to realize that they had a game Wednesday night, and one that unfortunately featured one of the top opponents in all of DFW in the form of the Redbirds.

Outside of any and all excuses that poured from the Spirits dugout, the Redbirds reflected the exact opposite on both sides of the diamond as they scorched the Spirits by a score of 15 to 0 that fortunately ended with a mercy rule fifth inning exit.

“Not much to say about this one,” commented team skipper, Shawn Lee. “It was embarrassing. We’ll take our medicine, get the hell off the field and hopefully return to give these guys a game next time. We simply aren’t ready to play baseball. There was absolutely zero pride in this dugout tonight.”

The team mustered just 3 hits against Dustin Harrison, who left with a no hitter after 3 innings pitched and 3 strikeouts. Jerry Anderson gave up a pair of hits after tossing one inning, and the Redbirds decided to let Brent Smerczynski also practice by pitching an inning an allowing the third hit.

Spirits starter, Duane Aponte had a rough go of it, pitching just one inning and allowing 10 runs, 5 of which were earned following a pair of errors in the first inning by the Spirits defense. The Redbirds finished with 15 hits before the dust settled, and also earned 7 free passes to first via walks.

The Spirits will get to hit the reset button in week two when they face Los Viejos on Arlington Field staring at 6:30PM next Wednesday. Click here for schedule details or to download the iScore Central app to listen to the game live online.
