(June 15, 2024 – Carrollton, TX) It doesn’t happen often for the Spirits (50+) offense. The squad is typically an offensive juggernaut, averaging 13 runs per game in most contests that last 5 innings and with a lineup of 12 players or more. But whenever the team faces the Redbirds, in any league for that matter, the Kryptonite buckles them to their knees no different than Superman taking a dose himself.
This past Saturday, infielder Jerry Gamez shut the Spirits down, finishing with a complete-game win while allowing 2 earned runs off 6 hits, while walking just one and striking out 3. James Hardt took the loss for the ghosts, tossing an inning and two thirds while giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, walking 3, and striking out a pair. Mike Sopocy closed out the final five and a third innings, allowing 3 earned on 4 hits while walking and striking out 2.
The Spirits offense mustered just 6 hits with Hardt picking up the team’s only extra base hit with a double. The offensive shortage wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Redbirds, who went on to pick up and easy 7 to 2 win. Gamez also finished with a pair of hits, 2 runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base to aid his cause. Stephen Smith also finished with a pair of hits including a triple, a run scored, and 2 runs batted in.
The team looks to get back into the win column next Saturday morning when they visit the Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00AM at McInnish Park, Field #11, and fans can click here for schedule details.
