Spirits Unleash Offense in One-Sided Victory Over Rangers

(March 20, 2019 – Euless, TX) The game was short and sweet, however the level of offense was not Wednesday night at the Spirits (40+) squad cruised to a 16 to 1 victory over the Rangers at the Texas Star Complex in DFW ABA League play.

The Spirits used a 3-run first inning to get a head start on the Rangers and solid pitching from Earl German kept the Rangers bats quiet. A 9-run second inning that appeared to last forever with two outs put the nail in the coffin early, and the team went on to brutalize the box score with 16 runs on 10 hits. In a game that was already lopsided, the Spirits could have made it much worse as they left 10 runners on base in just 4 innings of offense as the game was called due to the league’s run rule in the fifth inning.

Kirk Sipila and typical starting pitcher, John Holmquist led the offensive stat categories as each of them finished the night going 2-for-2. Sipila hit for a pair of doubles and finished the night with 3 runs scored, a base-on-balls, and 4 runs batted in. Holmquist also finished with a free pass to first, a run scored and an RBI. Stacy Scott added a perfect night as well, finishing 1-for-1 with 2 walks, a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBIs as did Brant Finchum, going 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and an RBI. Shawn Lee added a double, 2 runs scored and a pair of RBIs and German capped off the stat-padding evening with hit, run scored and 4 runs batted in.

German’s night on the mound was also solid as he delivered 4 innings allowing just 4 hits and a run scored with 3 strikeouts and no walks. Finchum closed the evening with 2 hits in an inning of work, while striking out one.

The victory moves the squad to 2-1 in DFW play as they head into next week’s game against last season’s champion, the Astros. The game is scheduled for an 8:45PM first pitch at the Texas Star Complex, Arlington Field. Click here for schedule details or to obtain directions to the game.
